Founder and director Olivia Brooks directs an all-star staff of adult and high school volunteers, a physical therapist, and even a pediatrician who make this camp a very special, very activity-filled chess extravaganza for all the campers! CHECK stands for Children Having Exceptional Chess Know-How. Check Mates is the Knight School's chess camp for children ages 5-14 who are diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome. The camp will be held this year on August 4th through 7th, 2014 at the Jewish Community Center in Mountain Brook. This is Monday through Thursday, and Check Mates will last each day from 9:00-11:15. There will be a one-to-one staff/camper ratio and there is absolutely NO cost for the week.

9:20-9:40—Activity time (Such as “Chess Master Says” (like “Simon Says”), Crazy Chase (human chess), chess songs, etc.!
9:40-10:05—Zany Videos and Chess Lesson of the Day with Puzzlers for Prizes
10:05-10:30—Play in a Chess Tournament complete with chess clocks and
Mardi-Gras beads for the winners. Losers will get “Happy Beads,” which is a different color bead.
10:30-11:00—Re-chess (Recess)/Snack Time
11:00-11:15—Finish up Chess Games/Closing Ceremonies/Silicone Wristbands for good performance
Check Mates will be joyous celebration of how smart we all are and how much fun it is to figure things out!
