History of the Academy

The Knight School has enjoyed a colorful history. Upon completing his Ph.D., Dr. Brooks, took a position at John Carroll High School in Birmingham teaching Honors Freshman English and AP World History. In year two of his high-school teaching he asked if he could initiate a chess team and seventeen years of teaching later, that team was still undefeated in school vs. school competitions in the history of John Carroll, boasting two state championships and a 23-0 record. During Dr. Brooks' final years at Carroll, many siblings of the JCCHS chess team requested that Dr. Brooks begin coaching chess at their elementary schools, and The Knight School was born. In the first year, Dr. Brooks continued teaching at Carroll and was coaching four after-school teams, the next year eight, then sixteen the third year. In 2012 Dr. Brooks retired from Catholic Schools after 20 years of teaching in order to devote his full attention to chess, and TKS doubled in size again to 400 students.

The Knight School stopped counting our victories after we had  won 51 school-vs-school matches and had lost zero. Our tactical approach is revolutionary, unprecedented, and devastating, and we have won over 20 State Championships and counting. Yes, we unapologetically put sportsmanship first, fun second, and chess prowess third. This is who we are: the State Champion Knight School, having fun at every opportunity.
